 The philosophy ‘dance with a smile’ is the energetic, colorful, exciting red line through the music preached by no less than eleven great musicians from the Netherlands. Amsterdam based Wicked Jazz Sounds Band is a team of musical all-stars. Their live reputation is growing and growing, an experience you do not want to miss. Jazz is the base, throwing out lifelines to hip hop, funk, soul, samba and even house music, wherever the musical wind takes them. Their motto? Let the music guide your life! Wicked Jazz Sounds Band arose out of the popular Wicked Jazz Sounds club nights where DJs and musicians play together on a danceable mix of jazz, hip hop, soul, funk, drum & bass, house and beyond…Call Wicked Jazz Sounds a movement (from the hips please!), an organization which started in 2002 organizing hot and steamy parties in an Amsterdam based club. This movement got bigger and bigger and started to attract a huge crowd. The parties were taken (far) outside Amsterdam and compilation albums were being made (Wicked Jazz Sounds volume 7 has just been released on the new Wicked Jazz Sounds Recording label). Musicians started to join the family by jamming with the DJs at the parties. And before you realize it, there is an eleven piece band with a debut album called ‘The Biggest Sin’. Publicity: Wicked Jazz Sounds Band had a great start at the Radio, they visited 3FM and Radio 2 (two of the biggest radio stations in Holland) many times! The band is announced 3FM ‘Serious Talent’. Three songs are on high rotation on Radio 6, the one and only jazz radio station in Holland. They also did a lot of interviews for the biggest National news papers and websites in Holland. And There are many amazing reviews. Was er dan helemaal geen lichtpuntje, behalve de inauguratie van Barack Obama? Jawel: de release van "The Biggest Sin", het eerste album van deWicked Jazz Sounds Band. De Wicked Jazz Sounds-filosofie dance with a smile wordt op deze plaat enthousiast, kleurrijk en met veel schetterend koper gepredikt. Noem Wicked Jazz Sounds gerust een beweging (vanuit de heupen, graag). Een organisatie die in 2002 begon met warmbloedige feestjes in een kleine Amsterdamse club. De beweging, die de knieën liet knikken op soul, funk, jazz en house, werd alsmaar groter. Er kwam steeds meer zweet aan te pas. Omdat de feesten drukker bezocht werden, omdat dj Phil Horneman zich liet bijstaan door meer gelijkgestemde muziekfreaks als Leroy Rey, Urvinson en Missing Links. Omdat een nieuwe generatie topmuzikanten zich aansloot die op de feesten ging spelen. Omdat de feesten ook ver buiten Amsterdam werden georganiseerd. Omdat er compilatie albums kwamen, het zesde deel werd eind 2008 uitgebracht. Omdat er een radioshow kwam op Arrow Jazz FM. En voor je het weet heb je een heuse elf koppige band, worden er nummers geschreven en is die beweging (schud je hoofd!) gevangen op een zilveren schijfje. De Wicked Jazz Sounds Band is eigenlijk een elftal superspitsen, een club waar je een seizoenskaart voor zou nemen. En een handdoek, want live druipt het zweet van de muren. Jazz is de basis van de muziek, als het lijf van een inktvis. De armen strekken zich uit naar onder meer hiphop, funk, soul, samba en zelfs house. Inspiratiebronnen zijn Herbie Hancock tot aan Amy Winehouse en van Earth, Wind & Fire tot The Neptunes. Wie zijn de kopstukken van de Wicked Jazz Sounds Band? Wel, neem zangeres Renkse Taminiau. Zij verraste in 2008 met een schitterende zelfgeproduceerde jazzplaat. Neem Berenice van Leer. Die zingt zo soulvol dat het lijkt alsof ze voor het slapen gaan gorgelt met rode bonen en rijst. Neem saxofonist Floris van der Vlugt, die lid is van de jazzband Quincey. Neem zanger Paul van Kessel, ondermeer lid van The Young Sinatras. En neem Gilian Baracs en Laurens Priem, de muzikale meesterbreinen achter de Wicked Jazz Sounds Band. Hun toewijding voor de muziek laat zich het best illustreren door een uitspraak van Gilian: "Ik wilde ooit de Nobelprijs voor de Natuurkunde hebben. Nu ga ik voor een Grammy; de Nobelprijs voor Muziek." De Wicked Jazz Sounds Band speelde natuurlijk in de Sugar Factory, elke zondagnacht het bruisende hoofdkwartier van de Wicked Jazz-beweging (handen in de lucht!) in Amsterdam. En de elf muzikanten gingen mee naar North Sea Jazz, Loveland, Paradiso, Melkweg, Dance Valley en (op tv) naar De Wereld Draait Door. De plaat is voor iedereen die daarbij was, of had willen zijn. Denk niet dat dance with a smile staat voor leeghoofdig escapisme. "Come To Me", gezongen door Paul van Kessel, is een ontroerende ode aan een verloren liefde. De eerste single "Love It All" uit de pen van Renske Taminiau, gaat over haar eindexamen aan het conservatorium, over de twijfels, de zenuwen en de ontlading. Afsluiter "Three Elements' is een vernuftige ode aan de beste band uit de geschiedenis van de soul en funk: Earth, Wind & Fire. Songtitels, statements en sfeer zijn op explosieve manier met elkaar verweven – precies zoals het grote EWF dat in de glorietijden deed. Over de Wicked Jazz Sounds Band en de Wicked Jazz Sounds beweging kun je uren praten en pagina’s volschrijven. Het is divers, doorleefd, kleurrijk, warmbloedig, superstrak, geconcentreerd en uitgelaten.
